If he truly was genocidal why at the ending did he form alliances with Vycans group? Why did he fight the dragon and take all the curse onto himself?
There was also a ten year time gap from them going into the gem and getting out. As well as other time gaps.
Ten years being sealed on a giant crystal is literally a consequence too btw.
I do think they could have shown us more of his changes but I do like what we got.
He fought other groups as a ruler who was trying to take care of his kingdom.
Were some of his actions not morally right? Not really, but he was doing what he was groomed to do as a ruler. Even I think he took some stuff too far.
But we see him grow and change and do what's right in the end.
Our FL would have left if he hadn't changed.
We're even seeing a "what if" situation where she doesn't pick him and look at that... He let her leave!

Look, we knew from the beginning they would get back together. It's ok if you don't like that.
But honestly as someone that read this all in one day.
It is actually pretty good. The ending is not a cookie cutter ending. Bc it's different it's going to feel disappointing.
I like that they communicate towards the end. This was always a fantasy story so it's not going to be the same with modern day morals.
It was original, the art is beautiful and fun, and we need more stories that don't follow a cookie cutter route.
