I agree. While BL/yaoi as a genre is notorious for SA and r*pe in its plot (along with questionable power imbalances as well). Maybe I joined the yaoi community late(late 2019 to early 2020) or was a 'Manhwa Only' yaoi reader, but the plots were bad back then too. Killing stalking was my first manhwa T_T. It was insane I couldn't finish it bc of gore but the story is definitely intricate and got depth and is not some r*pe fetish thing.

Nowadays as well, most yaois are goonslops. But from my pov, this has always been the case. Most yaois HAVE been goonslops or fetish thingys from back then as well. (Along with very much heteronormativity like twink bottom/truck build top, and wh*re top/v*rgin bottom dynamic, the tropes I HATE!!)

For me bls have always leaned to profit considering back then most of what i read even the good ones had an age gap because back then age gaps were marketable not only in bl but also shoju josei shounen AI and plenty more genres (idrk about yuri because most of what i read was quite safe) this has led me to speculate why SA and so many indecent fetishes and power imbalance have been more prevalent today compared to the past from my understanding this speific type of story/trope have been more recognize since the normalization of porn yes porn more off the younger mass and even the older ones are just discovering it leading to some of them to encounter bl and since the mainstream bls today are for example jinx or CNA which mind you has multiple SA scenes leading yaoi to become more and more normalized towards the type of trope people read like sa and since this trope gains significantly more revenue and profit other authors will infact hop on it making it morecommon this is why age gaps were so marketable back then...

Also yes bl has been quite notrious even back then but for another reason fucking age gaps orinvolving minors or shota bait especially junjou romantica or super lovers like damn please get older i mean junjou romatica was more acceptable compared to super lovers

I got into yaoi in the big boom like 6 years ago and imo its always been rapey (I readm manhwa and manga, and a lot of goon doujins ended up on my timeline... i was a different person back then...) My opinions have always been mixed and these days my enjoyment comes from parsing through the slop and finding peak, but there has been an influx of rape fetish/terrible writing. Sometimes there will be a really interesting premise because I do like darker/mature themes but the way they handle it is so awful and inaccurate that it makes me roll my eyes. Modern purity culture has made a comeback, where people don't like discussing sex, kink, or other aspects of humanity that DO exist and should be talked about and I think some yaoi criticism has been skewed by that belief, but I also understand that sometimes people just want a fluffy romance with characters made out of something other than cardboard. Not for me, but I respect it.

Before I go, someone mentioned heteronormativity in yaoi which is such a huge problem and I'm glad it was brought up. The whole 'I'm going to make you into a woman' or feminizing the uke, giving them more stereotypically feminine roles, personality traits, and designs is so weird to me because like... straight romances exist. If I wanted to see a toxic straight romance with no substance, I'd go into the local Dennys. And if I wanted to see a toxic gay couple with no substance, I'd read jinx. I still have no idea why that series had so much hype when it's rape rape rape, then even more rape. Truly disgusting.
