It’s alluded that the son grew up in the west and not under the care of the parents from the first story, and that is how he became as rebellious and bad as he is now. The king says in one part he regretted not being more involved in his upbringing bc and that he turned out a disappointment because he grew up in the west. It’s never really mentioned why he grew up in the west tho

There was like a pregnancy potion that allowed Shen Yu and the king to have a baby. In the second story following their child Shen Yu is still by his side as Queen, as he chose not to stay with his family and fell back in love with the king after the angst
