I don't really feel like it's dragging. For once we're getting a proper chase and redemption arch. Other stories brush over the shitty things a character has done in the beginning or grant them passage with a simple, "I'm sorry, I know I'm trash, but I love you!" And then all is well.

This story is showing the lasting trauma that was caused, the characters discovering their faults and weaknesses through their vulnerability to each other, and attempting to heal and over come those things. All of which would 1000% be required if a truly happy *and* healthy relationship is to have a chance to grow.

And since JK was ghosted, we've gotten a lot of context on his world view and how he originally viewed doc, and how those views are shifting not just because he's finally learning the truth, but because of the doc bringing out his humanity and vulnerability. Yes he did absolutely treat doc like shit and deserves all the pain he has been suffering, but he was struggling to survive the only way he knew how, and in all honesty, doc never once did anything to clear up the misunderstandings JK had about him. He was too meek to, which didn't meld well at first with JKs "fight and crush it all" mentality.

If JK was doing any less at all to learn the truth, to grow, to make amends, and repent, then he wouldn't deserve even a chance to be with doc. In other stories the chase and redemption arch is little more than lip service and apparent amnesia.
