My theory for now is that the quality/power of the family has diminished so much they now are either using ml’s power for these dark rituals leading to his bad health and luck or using chongdo as some sort of straw man for the bad karma they should be getting for sacrificing people/ the rituals.
Maybe he was destined to to d*e early so grandma used some forbidden/powerful juju that she paid for with her life, leaving him cursed with a special constitution that the family needs for their rituals because they have little shamanistic powers if their own.
I also think him and mc are going to be reincarnated versions of characters from the legend of the clan, ml being the dragon/snake thing that didn’t get to ascend and is being punished/cursed by heaven because of it. We saw that one scene where he was a snake coiled around mc.
It’s still a bit early to be sure, but what are your thoughts? :)
