it's broken (sorta) he doesn't think he's gonna see her ever again and he's really into rejecting his feelings. in the novel it's very internal in the dialogue and this dude is in complete denial of how much FL is affecting him. he's trying to distance from his own feelings when he gives it away. he's carrying it around even after it stopped working and really confused why he's so attached to it so when that girl asks for it he's like oh here's a good opportunity to prove i don't care about her at all! but obviously he does.

But yeah we can't use real life logic when reading fantasy
If the author say that he love her, then he really love her, no question about it

All the men are trash in this one. Even the ML. I was fooled. How can he just give away the gift she gave him!!? And to another woman at that. I have to drop it now for my own sanity. If anyone has spoilers please I’m open to being spoiled.
