yes ain is the duke and he originally wanted to mess with michel and k!ll him but couldn’t get himself to do it(he developed a soft spot for him) so he just kept postponing it until eventually the month was over and he decided to bring him with him to the castle

when i first started reading this i thought that Ain was the duke and i’m grabbing onto that idea, i’m like: please let this all just be an act by the duke to tell if Michel was a good person or not or to like know how michel was! but now i’m thinking it’s not like that and that makes me wanna cry so bad!
