Some people are just so far and deep into denial, it takes actually seeing it person the colors being revealed. Does it excuse anything to being in denial? No, but it doesn't make the Grandfather exactly a bad person either because he doesn't hate Lua nor had any animosity shown towards her so there's that going for him.
