The misunderstanding between Valentine (Ballantine? Tf?) being the Emperor and Miss Mayfield not knowing is like, completely necessary for the story & I understand this - also, it's kind of funny how all his closest friends assume he still dislikes the farm without actually asking him. Like, obviously they would, I just love seeing how naturally the misunderstanding is being written.
"Just talk to each other!" And they do! The issue just keeps becoming more multilayered, mainly due to Izkander himself actually being so hysterically clever that he's always one step ahead - he is his own obstacle! AND HE REALIZES THIS, BUT STILL FINDS WAYS TO RATIONALIZE IT (without being a horrible person)!! It's hilarious!! He has GOT to be one of my favorite MLs that I've ever encountered. Truly meticulous, a strategic problem solver like a king ought to be - and not even too clueless to his own emotions that it's frustrating. He's superb.
This is not even mentioning how wonderful the side characters are. Princess Katarina is obviously the first to come to mind, but I was also enthralled with Lady Kitty. I found myself wishing they were both given a bit more attention. (Though, I am a sucker for poised women with sharp eyes LOL)
Finally, truly, I like the main character a lot. She is nothing like me, and I could never be like her, but that's why I love her. She reminds me of a great buddy of mine, seeing her succeed just gives me a great sense of satisfaction. I think it's even mentioned in the beginning, her farmer Aunt and Uncle found themselves happier just by watching the FL become happy - I love that sentiment. The author has written some beautiful ideals into this that were soothing and moving. I love it here
