Yes, maybe. But it isn't all plot, we have to understand Alex was raised under his father's abuse. His parents who should have been the dependable figures in his life as a child were the most unreliable for him, he also didn't have anyone else he can depend on. So it makes sense for him to believe he would not get help from others and he should solve his problems on his own. Nathan was precious to him, but I don't think their relationship was enough for him to depend on Nathan for support of any kind in any situation. Alex is very much a close to real result of child abuse.

I feel like if Alex just blurted out the truth, Nathan would have believed & forgiven him but I guess they need the conflict for the storyline
