It’s overall a good story, refreshing in a way that it doesn’t focus on romance that much—it’s more on the growth and the healing process of the characters.
I like how determined and strong-willed the FL is and the way she learnt to grow herself.
However, there is undeniable evidence that the story towards the end is sort’ve rushed. Some of the characters should’ve been given more motive and depth. It felt like they were just tools to accelerate the plot with nothing in particular that could stick with you.
Hessen, FL’s second brother’s death was extremely rushed. There was no character development until it neared the end when he apologized. His family committed all those heinous crimes but he didn’t really participate in those, unlike Owen. It didn’t make sense for Lily to just take his life for amendments because he was an Everett.
ML, in a sense, is a good character with accountability. He’s deeply pained and in that hurt, he also hurt Lily.. but he’s not trash, as the tag would claim. He just couldn’t help others because he was drowning himself. Survivor guilt is indescribable and it didn’t feel fair that it was overshadowed by the FL’s growth. FL in the least, had Charlotte and Somnia who was there for her and only her.
Also, I extremely disliked the way the ML kept reasoning with everyone. He knew the crazy pink haired freak was insane at the start but he still stood there bargaining and talking sense to her. If I was him, I would’ve already burnt her using Seraphim the moment I walked in that door. There’s too much hesitation and too little action on his part.
Lastly, I think the only enjoyable part was FL contracting with Somnia. For a creature that’s often symbolized as evil and malicious, he’s irrevocably compassionate and attentive.
Overall, a decent read. I don’t think I’ll reread it though.
