Well, the father ALSO brings ulric. So its really is 50/50 chance for both of them really. Im guessing one has the capacity to strived to survive to met her while the other just hoping to be saved coz he’s noble.
I believe they really intend to dispose Ul. And the reason ulric is also dragged to the battlefield is cuz he is the son in law of a general. The hierarchy and patriotical beliefs of such a high ranking officer runs deep especially on those times of war. He doesnt him to die tho, thats why he is not on the front lines, and ul was. Well, unfortunately, you cant save someone in the battlefield. Sometimes even yourself.
Maybe thats why he used ul as proxy and brings ulric to battlefield.
