Idk about being a "Goodreads critic in training", but I read for the plot lol not entertaining or engaging enough? Drop. The plot rlly matters to me, and ofc I'm aware of the fact how most popular bl stories r like 40-50% goon, and 50% plot. Still, if the plot is full of holes and just dumb as heck, not itttt. Same with straight stories, even with or without romance. The plot just had to be written by someone sensible and not just in it for the money lmao
Also no shade, but like in EVERY story u read...??? Ur purpose is to just read to goon??? There's a difference between reading a story that is CLEARLY just pure smut, like a doujin, to goon, and then just regularly reading everyday lol If ur talking about the former, then I definitely agree. Sometimes we don't have to think about the plot if it clearly isn't the focus, but I do wish that the plot isn't as stupid(like cheating cuz of a misunderstanding..)

But if i were to pick solely between the two—- with plot ofc, even though i often jump to the horizontal charleston when reading smut, i drop it when it feels like they’re being too much of an animal in heat with no reason in sight (only repetitive freaky with no development or progress). Without smut. Every time I see a story tagged with smut, unless I'm feeling extra goonie and want to turn off my brain, I actively avoid those stories because they're nothing but slop. I saw an interesting cover the other day, it wasn't balls, cock, and tits on the cover like the usual suspect, which fooled me, but the moment I saw the smut tag, I was out. Gone faster than the fwop fwop fwop on the first panel of the first chapter of a smut story.
I'm fine w smut as long as the plot's interesting & vise versa, literally read a BL where I just skipped the smut coz I'm way too invested on the fucking plot. And it honestly just depends on my mood lol.
Bfr most of the time, smut stories had little plot.
But when I found smut stories with plot, it is not plotting that much, especially as a gay guy.
It is so fictionalize that I cant see smut stories that touch real life problems.
