as long as they credited his work it's fine, he's work is in a public domain and the artist is dead for over 70 years so and is possibly cover in the fair use rule because the painting has given a different meaning to the story. but, it's still good if the artist credited the original artist even if the artwork is in a public.

I don’t think this is really a big deal? For readers who are more familiar with art, they’ll recognise the piece; for readers who don’t, they’ll just think it’s a nice piece and move on? The artist is probably working to the bone giving us such gorgeous art for this manhwa, I can understand if they don’t have the bandwidth to generate a ton of original “art pieces” for this manhwa? yeah true, especially if the piece is part of public domain, and the main character artwork is definitely inspired from it but it's not the same and has different meaning. but , people who commented that the artist doesn't have the capability to create an original one instead of copying Klimt artwork. The Fair Dealing/Use rule is established because artists will surely or the public will be inspired to use the artwork on there own. I totally agree that the author and artist shouldn't be directly hated without knowing the legality of copyright in art piece.

It IS big deal. If you were reading a story where it said that the academic character wrote the theory of evolution, would it sit well with you? Whether it's a famous painting is not the issue, the point is that this type of move by the author is disingenuous, it breaks suspension of disbelief and undermines authentic history, it also takes a reader to be a fool. It's very jarring and I know readers have pretty low reading standards but this one is pretty out there.
