Whoa! Wow, so she is almost as nutty as her husband. I think her apathy came from years of abuse. She couldn't cry or throw a tantrum. It's unbecoming behavior for a noble lady, so to preserve herself, she learned to go numb, to feel nothing, even in the heat of battle. That would be terrifying to a weak man like Petios.
I too think the Baroness believes what she's saying but that's not what happened. I think Danel orchestrated most, if not all of it, all to finally possess her. There probably was no illness, but Petios did want to run and hide, so the illness was concocted by one or both brothers. Danel just took advantage of the situation Petios handed to him.
