Huh, now I'm even more confused. How did she know where to look for Petios, but not suspect Danel of anything untoward him til now? Could she not tell his sketches were full of hatred towards his brother?? She can see plainly how twisted he's become.
And then...the tears. She says he's terrified. Of what? Retribution from God? Was at least some of his supposed devotion to God real? Is he afraid of being vulnerable, of loving her despite the awful things he's done? Maybe it's a little of everything.
As for her, she's far from stupid, but...maybe it just never really occurred to her that he'd go so far. But then, he knocked her out every night. That should've clued her in, but then again, it isn't torture and murder.
