I thought it was unnecessarily brutal too, but if the goal of this work is to portray the reality of how humans have been heartlessly treating animals, the author's on the right track. Treating even young animals like playthings and commodities, that's what we do. As hard as it is to sit through, author's simply laying our sins bare on the table
