I just binged read this, at first I hated her character and it still frustrates me but I realized they were both unhinged. The princess was obsessed with the duke. She forced their engagement because she was a spoiled princess. She knew he was indifferent to her & said she just wanted to be with him. The duke being raised to be the perfect heir played along. Even her mother at one point was like please just play along. You see her obsession with him when he became a servant. When she gather those 3 servants so they can be killed/tortured.
The duke played along for survival. He was afraid, he had lost everything. This is when he “falls” in love with her. But one can argue his feelings could have been the result of Stockholm syndrome.
Their relationship started off with the whim of a spoiled princess. It was twisted since the beginning. I can’t wait for everything that happened to be explained. It’s obvious the princess was tricked by her brothers. She assumed he would get a noble title & be gone for maybe a couple years, and then they would be able to be together. The princess didn’t explain shit to him so he thought she had discarded her. Especially when he saw she had signed away her ownership of him. I’m assuming the brother’s thinking he would die at war, told her he was dead and tried to marry her off. That’s why in that scene where the duke killed everyone it looks like she’s wearing a wedding dress. But there’s something I’m confused about why did he make it seem she wanted to be empress. In that moment he said die a noble way or suck my dick, which she did. Maybe in that moment he just couldn’t kill her so he made that crazy agreement? Or maybe realizing he was going to be marked a traitor again, she thought that was the only way to protect him by becoming empress. Ughh this is basically the only reason why i stuck with the story despite both of then annoying me, cuz how did they end up with that agreement. Any novel spoilers?!
