I always thought that while Ash was teaching Grayson and the other children moral values and what was right and wrong, Dane was teaching him empathy, and rereading this episode, that's quite clear. Of course, Ash, being someone went crazy from pheromones, raised his children as properly as possible, but his approach to correcting behavior without explaining why something was wrong always pushed the children towards acting rather than genuine change. Therefore, a more collaborative parenting style, where Ash is disciplined and Koi is sympathetic, might have been more effective, but I don't blame him for wanting to protect Koi after what happened to him, and gentle-parenting didn't work for the children either. That's why I like that all of the Miller siblings have firm romantic interests, but also sides that show them empathy in a balanced way
