Hikaru is dead. Before he died he made a wish that Yoshiki wouldn't be left alone that's why "Nounuki-sama" took over his body to fulfill the wish and became "Hikaru" so he could be Yoshiki's companion. It was stated previously that Hikaru's injuries were too severe to be healed so the only option was to become "Hikaru"
Maybe Hikaru isn't fully dead..
I just got this thought when his dad showed "Nonouki Sama" a picture of new born Hikaru. After that, dad freed Nounuki Sama, whatever that exactly means.
So Nonouki liked Hikarus dad and was freed at the time it met Hikaru. Then why did it take his body? Here's my thought: Hikaru went up the mountain during a storm, right? Maybe he slipped or something else happened to him. He was almost gone but Nonouki Sama recognized him as Indos son that it saw on the picture. Now that it has a free will, maybe it took Hikarus body before he actually died, meaning Hikarus consciousness is still somewhere in his body. His soul didn't leave because Nonouki Sama is like a seam that keeps body and soul together.. And it did that because it really liked Hikarus dad and had no other real purpose maybe? I'm not sure, just an idea
