True, but every time there is any conflict he makes her stay close to Hwis or Gen and acts like she can't protect herself. I get wanting the king to be safe, but they make it seem like she has no self defense skills
Well, she's...the king. Even if a president or a king of the state knows how to fight, their safety is always the #1 priority. This applies to irl as well. An example would be Putin—he's proficient in martial arts + black belter in Judo iirc, but he has a LOT of bodyguards that protect him.
Also, their main job is to lead. Unless they're a conqueror (who both leads and fights), fighting should be mostly handled by the underlings
