The entire novel so far Varkas treats her like dirt despite loving her and only regrets it after she’s dead—the novel is unfinished and rn he’s experiencing Talia’s side by being reincarnated into the past as her pet wolf, Khan.
But, Talia’s mother devises a plot on this trip to delay Varka’s marriage by causing wyverns to attack but it results in Talía getting her legs crushed under rocks and permanently crippled. From there up until her death she’s on drugs for the pain and a laughingstock to everyone else. Varkas marries her out of obligation as he technically caused her disfigurement by abandoning her to save her sister instead. Talia becomes grand duchess but the entire duchy hates her. She knows that Varkas will never love her like she wants and is deeply saddened by it. Her mother tells her to have an heir but Varkas won’t sleep with her so she r*pes him until she gets pregnant but it ends in a miscarriage. Talía is severely traumatized, mentally ill and has post partum depression that everyone else calls her “karma” and bratty nature and instead of comforting her Varkas leaves for some kind of war. Talía is left alone and adopts a wolf pup named Khan. When Varkas returns, Khan attacks one of Varka’s family members, Lucas, and mortally wounds him so Varkas kills Khan (he didn’t but never says he didn’t). Talia is stripped of her grand duchess title and exiled to the annex. More stuff happens and Talia dies. Varkas is stricken with grief by this after reading her diary and goes off to kill himself when Khan appears and bites his throat. Cue being reincarnated into the past as Khan.
It’s a rough ride, the entire novel has a sobering atmosphere and it’s currently over 260 chaps.
I do want to briefly mention that Varkas is bound by an oath to Gareth and Ayla, so when he abandoned Talía to save Ayla it was because of his oath, but it was still really shitty. And he tried to strangle Gareth after he offered Varkas to marry Ayla after Talia died but couldn’t due to the oath. So, he loved Talia the entire time but his inability to show emotions and his oath ruined everything. He never loved Ayla either, he was forced to act per his oath. I don’t feel that sorry for him though, Talía suffered a lot of misfortune at the duchy bc of him. I have a hard time feeling sorry for Talía though too because she r*ped him. And sorry, but that’s inexcusable to me even if you’re mentally ill. I can excuse her cruelty towards others bc of how she was raised and it’s a defense mechanism but not the r*pes on Varkas.

Yup, it's a heavy read. The novel has highs followed by devastating lows. A lot of tragic events, trauma, gray morals, hard and uncomfortable topics so it's understandably not for everybody. The whole scene where Thalia forces herself on/rapes Barkas is very uncomfortable to read (obviously) because not only does she coerce/force him to have sex after being manipulated by her mother but she's so uncomfortable doing it that it's just devastating to read. In my opinion it's a meaningful scene cause it perfectly showcases how Barkas will do anything for her. Even to the point of fighting the curse placed on him.

This novel is so depressing knowing what’s going to happen in the future. It’s like stepping into a mud pit.
