Yep. If there was at least "tragedy" on there I would've known what to expect. I thought the same; that the one who died isn't the childhood friend who accompanied him throughout. It makes the reality of the last few pages even more painful, than if I knew from the beginning. I guess that was the intention. If it wasn't for his visit to that home, I would've deluded myself into hoping he's not dead, so at least it's still within the first chapter.
