Choosing a new ruler amongst ourselves? Preposterous!

Well, as he said there isn't any noble or knight among themselves, so no mages I guess. Plus, knowing how kindhearted those nobles mages are, can you imagine one of them passing by the city and seeing a measly commoner acting as the Lord? We all know that they will magnanimously slaughter them for daring acting above their station... So the question is who among the simple humans want to risk their Life for the sake of it when Dark elves and crazy mages might target you?
