ur so right, i saw this off tiktok and thought it was like js cowboys or smth but the setting really threw me off because ur right in that the manhwa then takes it upon itself to be historically accurate if they’ve introduced dates and set it in that time… the dynamic also feels a bit icky, the art is good but if the authors js wanted yaoi then they should’ve js made them cowboys. truthfully im a bit scared cuz I wouldn’t be surprised if they exploit the dynamic rather than acknowledging the reality of what was going on. also I have sm thoughts abt the darker feral top being ‘civilised’ by a lighter more educated bottom,,, to me its the epitome of colonial ideology if not a slightly more progressive colonial fantasy but I digress …. ig for this manhwa we’ll see
Asian here so feel free to disregard. I’m curious to know if you think the ML is Native American. That’s what I assumed from the skin tone and hair beads. To my limited knowledge on slavery because the American education system is whack, I was under the impression that native Americans weren’t enslaved… though I wouldn’t be surprised if they were either.
So when he called himself a slave, I was a bit surprised? I assumed he was a hired farmhand since he could ride on a horse by himself, taking a heard of animals super far away. Which is not, I assume, at all common for a slave to do. But I’ll be watching for more chapters with backstory.
TOTALLY AGREEE i would’ve had my ears perked if this was set literally anywhere else cause i loveee cowboy stories but i feel like having such a serious topic that frankly ruined our livelihoods be used 4 ur stupid yaoi just feels like a major slap in the face. ESP AFTER JUNETEENTH LIKEEEEER girl u gotta go NOW
Lol its cool that was just a joke. but natives were enslaved during the civil war as black people were. i also think its important to mention that if there was one thing that the union and confederates had in common was a hatred for native americans due to the fact that they obviously didn’t want to give up their ancestral land and the white supremacy mindset in general. The thing with this story is, the more u think abt it, the weirder the implications get. A union soldier x A native slave and the fact that natives actually owned many black people (i don’t remember what tribe ml comes from or if it’s mentioned yet but i feel like this is gonna get weird)
Oh interesting! I’m curious to see if the author ends up going over any of that, but I assume they don’t have any American history education in Korea so there’ll likely be a lot of incorrect information. So it may be best, if you keep reading, to treat the story as an alternate universe. Kinda like… magic realism. It would be super cool if the author’s done a deep dive into American history and the racial clashes, but I’m not going to hold my breath on that.
I’m going in with the assumption that this will be a more emotional driven piece centered on personal character events with American-light history as a backdrop.
Kinda like reading a fantasy where you realize 50 chapters in you don’t know much about the world but they have servants/slaves who are totally happy serving the emperor but you know at least five different ways the MC likes being plowed and also all their trauma. It’s just gonna be much easier to spot this since they’re trying to ground it in actual history

As a black person, i have a lot of thoughts on this already.
1. i’ve mentioned it before but the fact that Gerard was in the union makes me think that the author wants a taboo slave/master relationship without fulling have to commit to it.
2. also noticing that the slaves (excluding the ml) r just background characters r all adults with no discernible facial features and only seem to really exist to make gerard look morally righteous.
3. Also fun fact, the union originally didn’t fight to abolish slavery! they fought to keep america united! so in 1861 when Gerard joins, he was most likely was not an abolitionist. while he’s anti-slavery now i just thought that was important to mention.
4. im truly so tired of the abolitionist x slave trope. is it as bad as the slave/master? no. but does it still grind my gears when the oppressed is shipped with their oppressor.
5. ok im almost done talking but its really funny to me how niggas r focusing on the top and bottom positions of these two and i’ve only seen on person on here address the huge elephant in the room. which leads to a fear that regardless of whether this story will be historically accurate and touch on the horrors of slavery in america without sugar coating. most won’t even bat an eye because they’re uneducated, or don’t care, or only here to jerk off! most likely all of the above.
Anywayssssss i would lovee to hear another’s opinion on this!!! (by others i mean like black and native people, i don’t really care of kaylaeigh from wyoming has to say about this) idk maybe i’ll end up eating my words in a distant future and this will be the best depiction of slavery in the manhwa scene!!!! or not,,,probably not.
