If you think this manhwa isn’t racist you are either racist or extremely ignorant.
If you want know why people have issues with this manhwa here are the following: - White Saviour Complex (google it) - Removal or Santiziation of history (in this context centering a white man over the affected victimized majority being indigenous and black slaves) - having a character call himself a slave (with the setting and time period this is not funny or sarcastic) - the “sob story” that the author gave mc to garner sympathy is laughable, his family died to support a good cause, slaves committed suicide to avoid being beaten, whipped and raped regularly, some were lynched, others cannibalized probably all sorts of disgusting things were done to them. Some of them even had to kill their own babies to spare them from what could only be considered hell - The MC’s family is still rich, there’s absolutely no way they’re rich without still earning from slave labour - While he and his family fought in the war they still owned slaves, he only let them go because he had lost everything else, that’s not generosity, he did it for himself, hence white savior complex. - The Civil war is an extremely sensitive topic due to how often it is downplayed and abused in media, especially in how it relates to how indigenous and black people are treated today. Slavery did not end after the Civil war and what took place afterwards was still a time filled with racism. White people were not the main sufferers of the civil war and to portray media as such is heinous. - the Union was not perfect or innocent, they helped slaves for their own reasons and profits. - Mc has stated he was only in the Union due to his father being there, he has no overt showings of being a “good person” - Anybody who knows anything about Korean history would understand that if the story was set during Imperial Japan, and it was a Korean slave and Japanese man Korea would have this Author’s head (Koreans get upset when kpop groups even have Chinese or Japanese members due to history) Why then is it ok when another country’s history is used.
It is extremely disrespectful to POC who actually fought for their lives and rights in America to have someone who evidently knows nothing about their history, take their experiences and turn it into a master slave romance just sell it as regular old media.
Ignorant people can still be racist, you don’t have to say slurs or discriminate to be racist. Being racist can be as simple as treating someone as lesser in anyway shape or form simply because of their race.
If you think that this is ok because “well allowed kidnapping and rape so why not this?”
Don’t speak for other people that’s your shit not ours, and even then, in bl, none of those actions are related to a certain demographic other than mainly being perpetuated by men… and we’re talking abt bl. A very stupid argument.
Yes if you’re on here you’re not supporting the author BUT it’s important people spread awareness so that these plot lines do not become a norm. We don’t want history to be bastardized for entertainment.
If you are going to support the author either way, this post is not for you! Fuck you!
For everyone else, I think people should learn understand why things are called “history” and why history recognizes what roles people played in certain time periods, because media reflects history, and demonstrates to modern individuals what happened and why the world is the way it is today. There’s nothing wrong with basing fiction of off history but if you’re going to base it off of history you have to be extremely vague (As in just have them be cowboys) or extremely accurate (Address the entirety of the Civil War and The time period afterwards), anything inbetween is just nitpicking facts in a time where you require the whole story to understand.
Please be respectful to people’s history, this isn’t the author’s.
