The Union was not a perfect entity during the Civil War, they were a rich white family during this time which means they likely got rich off of slave labour, they had their own slaves, “freeing” slaves meant nothing as the Post Civil War laws dictate they had to do so anyways and slavery still continued after it was outlawed so he really didn’t do anything.

Is it racist to set it during the reconstruction era? No. Is it racist to show a slave owning rich white man as a white savior? Yes.
Clearly the author didn’t do the proper research to be handling this matter, which they SHOULD have done considering how it is still affecting black Americans today.
This is set to be a wonderful story! For those who need a history lesson, this isn’t racism. Also, he was a Union soldier during the American Civil War. Just depicting the war and placing characters in the Reconstruction era doesn’t make it racism. And denying it all happened negates half of great literature.
