He's not hateful IMO, he's just way clingy and over-protective and pretends to be a lot weaker than he is and act pitiful in front of her in order to get her to do what he wants, which many other readers hate, but which I don't mind because to me it works perfectly given her tunnel vision on saving the world and herself, and given how she's way too straight forward to care, let alone even notice...
