I don't know anything about that happened but my guess the author probably felt bad for the readers liking the 2nd male lead more than the 1st. Thus author-nim mighta kinda sorta stopped trying to give the readers more reason to prefer the 2nd lead.
The way ch 39 ended felt like the author intended to continue with the scene with Woori, yet now in ch 40 we immediately see mc running away and his sex scene with 2nd ml is abruptly over. Did the author get backlash for the way their story was going or something? The transition feels....unnatural? And almost forced? Not that I'm complaining, I don't really like it when mc's have sex with multiple partners in my smut but still.....it feels weird here.
