It is neither tbh. It is just that, because he doesn't have those memories and ppl from today will likely have a different "self" than from 10 years from now, it doesnt quite feel like they are the same person to him.
Like, imagine u one day just wakes up to find out u had 10 years of experience in that body and ppl interacted and loved u 10 years from your current state when u felt worthless... it is kinda bound to cause some dissonance, specially considering in his mind, tenessee would never be with him no matter how much he begged for it. So him being accepted feels too surreal, as if his future self is another person
Split personality? Bipolar? It's starting to feel wired as he's referring his past self as a different person...kinda seems like he's having sex with someone else.
