people genuinely need to realize how incredibly bizarre this storyline would’ve been. there is nothing romantic or cute about making gay porn out of the brutal slavery faced by emancipated people in the USA. even in the north slavery continued on into the late 1960s, some black people weren’t even informed that they were ‘free’, let’s not forget black people were never techniqally free, they literally had to fight for their lives for the right to vote and that too was only given to them under the 3 fifths compromise that continued on, where a black man’s vote was only counted as 3 fifths as he was only seen as 3 fifths of a human being. let’s not forget slave owners literally used black children as alligator bait, ate slaves, raped women and girls. after slaves we’re so called freed, even the northerners wanted to deport black people back to ‘africa’ and the american government even colonized and systematically killed people in what is now known as Liberia for this resettlement program that would’ve killed millions more of people. i’m glad the author recognized this and stopped this, if they wanted to do this they should’ve just made it about two soldiers instead of this slave master dynamic in a made up fictional universe. seeing the confederate flag in this context gave me whiplash.
