    because koreas exposure to christianity has mostly been in the form of colonialism/missionaries and cults

    it's secular, but out of the east asian countries, (china, japan, s.korea), SK has the most prominent christian religious population, with all the baggage that comes with that (lgbt intolerance and messianic cults). i'd guess that's where the antagonistic church trope comes from. i think it's a recurring trope in the west for similar reasons.
