Minyoung played the long game.

His solution of outing Cheol was extreme, practically the nuclear option. He didn't care about how much damage it would cause Cheol because, in his mind, a broken Cheol could still be fixed and healed. A dead Cheol couldn't. Cheol had already nearly died because of his abusive family, which is what made Minyoung snap in the first place and resort to such a drastic method. So his priority was keeping Cheol away from his family, and it did work.

We should also remember that Minyoung is obsessed with being with Cheol and becomes crazy when someone tries to hurt him. So the fact that he outs Cheol and then leaves him for years shows just how serious he is about protecting and keeping him now. There's a saying that goes, "It's better to ask for forgiveness than permission," and that's exactly what Minyoung is doing. He nearly lost Cheol forever once, and he's not going to let it happen again, no matter the cost.
