I hear you. I used to think like that too, but after the manhua stopped updating, I decided to read the novels and now I'm a huge fan. It's definitely slowburn, and I remember almost quitting halfway for needing to make notes while reading (the names and places were hard to understand, even the culture). Luckily the english novels have a list and an explanation for every major character, place and hard terms.
Btw, the story includes these tags and more: sexy swordfighting, awkward sexual situations, unresolved sexual tension, power bottom, gore and angst, hostage situations and kidnapping, etc.
Tastes differ and it is ok, no need to think smth is wrong with yours or with other's. This type of stories are heavily influenced by chinese culture, philosophy and mythology, so it could be quite confusing for an unprepared reader but the more you read similar stuff the easier it becomes. I personally loved HOB, i am not a pro in Chinese culture but after you read so many chinese novels you kinda get it all from the context.
The manhua would have been extremely difficult to follow, if I didn’t read the novels first. A lot has to be explained within a short period of time, so a lot of the plot gets rushed. + A bunch of new characters get introduced that have similar sounding names for foreigners, which makes is even more challenging to read. At least that's how I felt reading the manhua version of Heaven Official's Blessing. Do you have a favourite manhua that you’re comparing this to?
so true about the names! I read so many chinese novels and sometimes manhuas but close the page and ask me the name of the mc and i will not be able to do it i cannot remember any names at all and sometimes they are relatives (esp the case if they are like 5 blood related brothers or smth) with the same surname and similar first names and then it is even worse. And if manhua at least helps with having a distinctly different art of the characters (though not always, sometimes they all look the same), we dont have this with novels so i got confused while reading some novels it is a bit better with korean names though. Still cannot remember them afterwards. It might sound nationalist but i cannot help it. I love reading asian bl (and het too) but i cannot remember any names
Then can you please add the manhuas which you are comparing this to?
And fyi, this is a slow burn story + you do know that Chinese govt are very strict with censorships right? So often any historical manhua won't have much romance scene added. There will be exceptions for some other authors but the result of getting caught means Jailed.
And I don't how which manhua you compared this to and called this mid when this is one of the most famous historical and greenest manhua out there.
Also nobody forced you to read it anyways, because if a guy yearning for another for 800years, lit up 300 lanterns in the sky and built countless shrines and statues in his honor before they were finally reunited seems mid to you then okay fine. Let's move on
As an Asian, I don't really have much problem with their names, must be because I'm used to it. It's fine and totally understandable when you're not use to it, dw~
Oh plus the looking the same part, honestly Asians genetics are really strong(lol) because I have 2 sisters and.... We kinda look similar, I look like the mixture of both of my sisters XD so welp. And the most funny thing is... Sometimes you find people (strangers) out there that looks like someone you know but they aren't
But asians do not look the same irl ))) i am from a country in central asia, so i can tell (no problem with names here, cz they do not sound anything like chinese or korean names, mostly they are taken from the native language so the meaning is obvious to me like Happiness or Beautiful flower and sometimes from arab, as most of the people are Muslim here). But in manhua, in donghua and smts in manhwas it is often the case if they go for realism and make everyones hair colour black.

Boring and overrated
