The former emperor is dead. Remember he said the only way his wives could leave and choose freedom is if he dies. That's how she could go on her adventure without it being a mission or imperial directive. The first consort has been exiled and it seems her family was stripped of their power since they hired assassins and their vassal smuggled explosives
I really liked this, however what was that ending!?! The king just up and went into a coma? What about the first consort? There is still much left unsaid yet.
