I can very easily see why people thought this was offensive. The white savior aspect of the mc “freeing” his captives was one thing, but to also frame it like he’s exceptional for doing so even though he was legally required to do it at that point was downright ridiculous. It is perfectly understandable that the author realized they do not have the knowledge, or ability to approach a story like this in a respectful manner and decided to drop.
That being said, as a black person, I am a little sad that this might scare off artists from making stories about cultures that are not their own(or white people) for fear that they might upset people. If I were to give one piece of advise, it would be for this author to make another story with people of color in the main couple, but taking place in a less precarious time and setting, just to get more experience and receive criticism without running the risk of creating something egregious out of ignorance. Then return to this story once they are confident enough to do it well.
