I dont think of it as an eavesdropping problem as much as being in the wrong place at the right time. He wasnt sneaking around following them to listen. I think in his situation most of us would stop to listen if they heard their lover dropping bombshell about them or their love past.
It's also only happened these two times so rest assured
He really does have an eavesdropping problem and its becoming annoying. I hate that the author is using that to drive the plot forward.
