What really sucks about this (independent of the very obvious setup we can all see coming from a mile away), is that the mc really is all alone and unprotected—which makes him disposable. Any time you’re around well connected, powerful people, the worst thing you can be is someone w/o any connections or power—especially if you aren’t smart enough to read the room. He’s focused on all the wrong things and, as much as it makes for a good story, it’s making me so anxious for him!
