Honestly might be a bit unpopular opinion but for how complex these characters are I'm not...

I actually think the opposite, I don’t think the story portrays Alicia that 2-D, i think she has quite a bit of depth. I think the main thing with Alicia and Paula is their story is entirely haunted by the deaths of their sisters and the poverty they endured, and it reflects constantly in how both sisters act. Even though we know very little about the other sisters, their presence is felt, it’s felt in how Alicia cruelly blames Paula for their deaths, how she talks about them as if they’re alive in the conversation they had before Ethan and Vincent fight, just so she can mock Paula, and you can take that scene at face value and see it as her flippantly not caring about her sisters and just caring about hurting Paula but later when they argue one-on-one she echoes the sentiment genuinely which shows that Alicia IS affected by how her sisters die and that she blames Paula for it which to me informs why she hates Paula so much, paired with her fathers influence on her giving her a constant feeling of being above Paula and also her disgust towards their poverty and her desperation to climb socially to escape it entirely. For me I think Alicia’s character centres around this, she wants to shed herself completely from her past because of two feelings she experiences simultaneously, that she is beautiful and therefore should not be forced to endure something ugly like poverty — a warped perspective likely gained from how the people around her treated her because of her looks, probably largely from her father too — and a constant fear that she NEEDS to climb above poverty because she is haunted by what happened to her sisters and that there is nothing protecting her from the same happening to her, and this part of the reason why she hates Paula so much because she probably also believes the sentiment that Paula was lucky to be so ‘ugly’ because it saved her from the same fate as her sisters ~ to her the fear that haunts her and causes her to so desperately try to socially climb is something Paula doesn’t have to worry about because she’s ‘ugly’. Their relationship in and of itself is one of this weird kind of codependency, they don’t have to stay together, it wouldn’t be impossible for them to live apart but they still live together, they’re unable to escape being sisters and they’re also moreso unable to escape being eachothers *last* sisters. Which is why underneath all the cruelty Alicia shows Paula you can see a very very small amount of restraint (really not much), she never hurts her physically and never tries to (so far at least), you’re wrong in saying she wants death on her family member in that scene she tells her she doesn’t actually want her to die — just to act like she’s died by running away. Not much better but the distinction is there, also during their big fight after Alicia gets mad at Paula not following through with her promise even with all the clear anger and hatred she feels to Paula there it all culminates in her just smacking her with the pillow and Paula taking it — for me this scene is the most important in Alicia’s characterisation, it almost feels anticlimactic, in another manwha where they wanted to depict her as a cartoonish villain they would’ve had Alicia physically harm Paula here but instead they have her smack her with a pillow — it’s such a stark contrast with how Alicia constantly acts, she never has any qualm with cruelly hurting Paula emotionally, but when she is full of that much anger she fights her in such a childish way, without hurting her whatsoever, I think with this it’s very telling that she is not wholly bad, and that there is still a (very small) level of care she takes towards her sister. Personally, I think her character is elevated by showing her complexity through little moments like that rather than a shoed-in backstory, which in manwhas i always feel like just seem like the story demanding you to feel pity for a character by force feeding you a sympathetic backstory which is really annoying to me. Alicia is a girl is who is haunted by her sisters deaths and haunted by her poverty, and instead of attempting to overcome it the way Paula does, by remembering her sisters and using their memory to help the people around her (like she does in the scene with Vincent where she helps him recover from the nightmare), Alicia instead attempts to overcome it by literally climbing above it and her warped upbringing has caused her to perceive Paula as an ugly thing she needs to shed to reach this goal, this paired with a genuine resentment because of how she blames Paula for her sisters deaths informs how she acts within the story, yet the story also makes a point to show moments between Paula and Alicia where they act like sisters and despite showing her acting as though she wants to be rid of Paula, she still sticks with her and constantly relys on Paula to get her out of trouble — this to me shows that Alicia is a complex character and not so cartoonishly evil as she might seem at first glance. Anyways, that’s most of what i want to say i’m not very good at expressing myself so I hope you can understand! And sorry for the massive message i’ve already talked about Alicia’s characterisation in these comments already before because i really do love it and i think it is quite complex! tbh i didnt read ur whole comment but dont worry in the novel her chara was very realistic at the end i understood how she thinks and has become. its always about survival and betrayal if ur born with nothing she has not much empathy but that makes her realistic in my opinion. she choose to ve this way like many in real life do

I only noticed that part where they fought and figured that Alicia blamed Paula for the death of their siblings and paired with her obsession for getting out of poverty made me see a glimpse of how she turned out that way.

No matter how much I hate Alicia for the things she did for Paula I still cant help but be interested in her story as she really is abit complex than the typical villain.

wow this is such a great analysation, everything said made sense and not just something u pull out ur ass, and u're right! i got it immediately bcz i have as sister. sibling relationships or family relations in general, is the most complex out of all the love out there. it's always a mix of love and hate.
