Maybe the two men were lovers and the crown prince did his best to prevent Richard's death. Seeing no more way out of it, he started to court Lady Daphne instead. But she always keeps dying as well. As some point you have to ask why? Why does the Crown Prince's lover keeps dying? Is it the emperor??
