Personally, I think its his anxiety seeping in showing just how scared he is to lose garam. It's less about seeing Garam as his replacement and more about the fear of being left behind again. Sometimes when people are at their happiest , they start worrying like What if something goes wrong? or What if I lose this too ?I think that's what's happening here with heejae

It’s literally his guilt personified. (Not metaphorically in this case but yeah). He has his head too far up in ass most times and from what I saw during that arc, doesn’t want to be that way. It’s just the only way he knows and he’s aware he hurts people. So in his mind, since he hurts people why would someone like him? Or even grow to like him? Since they’re going to hate him anyway why not prove them right?
Only he was extremely wrong when it came to the manager. He kept pushing him away and dismissing his feelings even while he clearly wanted him around. I don’t recall if it was ever made clear but from what I’ve seen, the manager knew he was going to die and that’s why he left. I could very well be wrong with this but eh.
Prof has some severe abandonment issues and so when manager left it was more of a ‘I told you so!’ Moment. He actually kept saying similar phrasing to MC as well like “I’m going to hurt you.” “I hurt everyone.” And this ties into why he calls himself a knife.
So to be clear, the reason why he keeps seeing the manager is because it’s his sign that this time he shouldn’t mess things up. They’re similar in the ways how they can understand the things he shows them. Both MC and manager are shown to be this like ball of light and I believe that’s to show that their intentions and emotions are pure and true. That they say what they mean. He just has to let down his walls and trust them.
