i think my main issue with this is the childishly stylistic proportions the artist gives the characters. right at the very beginning, chapter 1, the characters looked perfectly aligned with their supposed ages, yet after that, they began looking like children.
the primary problem lies with the fact that this issue somehow only applied to the two main characters. everyone else also looked stylized, but actually looked their proper ages. miss hillson, carol, the eustace couple, leona, kardel, and richard rusty.
somehow, mag and jack just looked like children the whole time, and it aways threw me off since they were the ones we were seeing most because they're the literal main characters.
like, no kidding, mag looked no older than twelve in her first few chapters after being rescued, and so did jack, albeit he looked more like he was in her early teens rather than preteens like mag.
after mag started getting cleaned and gained more confidence, she finally started looking older---like someone who was between the ages of 15 or 18. jack still remained visually childish when portrayed alone, but when beside Mag or other characters, he seemed proportionally his age. only his face and how it's structured depict him as a child.
it was only right around the end chapters that jack finally started looking a bit older. yes, even if he seemed to still be only 15-18, rather than his intended age ranged 19-23, but it was still an improvement.
regardless, the art more than made up for the childish appearances with the great storyboarding, paneling, and ethereal coloring. amazing storytelling by the art-thor.
