My 'best' friend ditched our schedule last-minute just so she can be with her other friends

I have this best friend that I consider the closest in college. We have the same interests and stuff. We basically share almost everything through chats and irl when we meet.

The thing is, we're both delayed (hence why we became close in the first place) but I'm more delayed lmao so we basically talked and had a deal that we should match each other's schedules so we could be classmates on our majors (mind you, we already talked about this for MONTHS). So she sent me her schedule and I matched hers, except for some subjects that we need to take separately. All is good UNTIL a major uploaded a new schedule hours before the deadline and she changed everything about her schedule TO MATCH OTHERS because she said that "it's better to have close friends in lab classes and other majors" I couldn't change my schedule because a subject I'm taking is in conflict with her new schedule.

I already told her that and she just replied "my bad" and "HAHAHAHAHAHA" when I said "what about me?" to her message "it's better to have close friends in lab classes and other majors". I'm already behind and instead of apologizing, she just laughed and haha reacted to my message :(

It's been a few days and I haven't replied to her messages. I'm still pissed since she's the reason why my umbrella got lost/stolen on that same day since I reserved a seat for her with the filler notebook I bought since she ran late to our exam, and to avoid the notebook being flown away, I put my umbrella on top. Exams started and she just arrived, I didn't notice where she put my umbrella. I came back to the room alone after the exam but it got lost. She didn't even apologize and didn't offer to go with me when we rode the same transportation after our exam.

Sigh I apologize for the long rant. I just feel heartbroken since I consider her my closest friend and even thought of what I would give her if I become rich one day. Idk anymore

Do not be friends with them anymore if they continue to treat you this way gng. It's better to just stay as aquaintances. They don't seem that committed to the friendship, and I honestly don't think they deserve you as a friend

It's sad that some people are unapologetic even though theyre already in college, but hopefully you get better friends !!

If you told her you're upset and she doesn't apologize, i'd say the trash took itself out.
No matter how behind you are in your education journey, you can get better friends than someone who is careless with your things and a semester's worth of your time

Here’s a hard life lesson for you both. It’s not always good being in class with friends. Especially ones that involve group projects. If she’s in classes with her close friends, chances are they’re going to work together and chances are there will be someone too lazy to work and all the work will fall into one person. That’ll deteriorate their group.

Now for you, you need to solely focus on yourself and your schooling. If this is college, you’re best bet is to first and for most focus on your education and your own future. Not hers. Umbrellas are cheap so it’s not a huge loss (it was on sale for 2$ at my Walmart last week). If you still prefer having friends, make new ones. Find people with common interests as yours and go to events that the school may hold. Make new friends there,

Friends from high school and college doesn’t always last, especially once interests and lifestyle shifts, especially work. If you think it’s bad now, wait until one of you start a family. The one with a family, especially kids will no longer have time for anyone else. Best of luck!

Thank you so much! I've been rethinking of our friendship the past few days, and I feel like I should set boundaries and don't get too close with her like before. I just feel disappointed since I consider her my closest friend

I did ask her "what about me?" when she said that she changed her schedule to be classmates with her other friends, and she just unfortunately laughed at my message and said "my bad" since she thought I could match hers, though I already told her I couldn't a few messages ago then she went on to change the topic and justified hours later why she wouldn't change. I didn't reply afterwards

Yeah ig I need to get better friends that isn't just one-sided from me :') thank you!

Yes we're in college. The reason why we wanted to match schedules in the first place is to get a better group since we'll be together, and we could rely on each other especially since lab classes are difficult. Ig that's why she ditched me for others when she saw their schedule lol

Yep, I'll just focus on my own. I already had classes where I'm just alone so it's nothing new, but I just feel upset since we had this plan for months but fell through last minute because of others she just became friends with recently.

(The umbrella actually has sentimental value since it was given to me by my mother poor guy got lost a few times but always come back to me, but it got lost forever now)

Lastly, I actually thought we'd be friends for life. I already started considering her in my future when I have money and I'll buy her the merch that she wants, but I suppose it's all for naught since she ditched me just for a schedule, what more in the future

Ahhh sorry about the umbrella. Hopefully it’ll find its way back to you. As for that said friend, just forget about her. Her red flags are showing, don’t ignore it, she does this once means she’ll keep doing it. It’s rare to stay friends with people in college. Once you start working in your career, you’ll meet better people., possibly for friends for life. Best of luck with your future!
