In other words, it's translating. It's trying to put yourself into the headspace of the artist who created the original piece and it's story behind it, capturing emotions and themes.
An example could be This story is the author's own interpretation of Eurydice and Orpheus in Greek Mythology.

I’m not a musician at all so can someone explain something to me? When they talk about interpreting a piece, what exactly are they interpreting? I know this is a massive oversimplification, but I thought you just play whatever’s on the sheet music? Thanks!
