It's not purely symbolic. While you are partly right, especially since he's able to still have his account, his basic needs are still going to be controlled financially. Yes, he's absolutely not fully bound by it, since he has means to stop it (the contract can be terminated and he still has his own money), however he is psychologically bound to a dynamic he contractually agreed on, and ml will be checking what the money is spent on (even the freely spent money). Yes, it could absolutely be worse in the story, but i still felt the need to warn people just in case.
Listen man, as long as there are notarized legal contracts that protect the rights of all parties involved, it’s fine.
But legally binding contracts with proper terms are a must on both ends.
Because 1. Rules out scum who just want to use the sub’s money rather than take care of them and pamper them/ use it as a tool to help them make better financial decisions in the case of a financially irresponsible sub (u know that ones that blow hundreds of dollars on random shit and stay poor for life. That way u can treat them and buy them the things they like *in moderation* with ur own money and save theirs. Just teaches them better habits especially if ur trying to stay with them long term and eventually have joint financials. Nothing worse than a spouse who keeps wracking up their credit card debt needlessly and u keep having to pay it off for them to protect both of ur scores. Honestly the only time this is acceptable is when u know u want a long term legal binding relationship/ marriage with joint filing. Granted with enthusiastic consent ofc)
2. Protects the sub directly. That way they can ensure if shit hits the fan their dom won’t falsely accuse them of stealing the money or financial fraud etc (to make sure the dom won’t demand the sub to repay what they had been spending throughout the relationship when they breakup etc)
That being said none of this is my thing at allllll. I just don’t like absolutes. There are situations where it is acceptable and both partners enjoy it and that’s okay. The main thing is to just make sure you’re safe and have enforceable contracts that’ll hold up in court no matter how much you trust your partner. Naturally the partner who wants to exercise the financial control would be the one who has to cover all legal fees.

Look, i'm not gonna shame anyone's kinks, especially in fiction. Fictional toxicity can be hot, since you are able to experience it from a controlled, safe environment as a reader, hurting no one and more importantly not yourself(unless you're a minor and your brain is still developing). Anyway, my point is: NEVER, EVER GIVE AWAY YOUR FINANCIAL DEPENDENCY TO ANYONE. ANYONE. NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU TRUST THAT PERSON. NO ONE ASKING YOU OF SOMETHING LIKE THAT IS ACTUALLY WHO YOU THINK IT IS.
