Had almost the same experience when I joined a new company during covid and almost no one from my department came to office since most of them were ordered to WFH and the only senior who came to the office 2 times a week at that time couldn't give a good explanation regarding our job. The situation was quite bad to the point I had enough of their shts and filed a complaint to them. For sure in front of my manager, after I stated all the facts, they talked non sense when it's their turn to talk lol.
Then 3 years later, I discussed about it to a director at my new company about why should we had all those experiences when they could just give us a proper direction, and they said like this
"If you are a new hire, you will be expected to make any kind of mistakes for 1-2 year later to help you learn and gain experiences in any kind of situation. That will also help your personality to be a bit mature and deepen you understanding not only about your job or the company, but also people around you.
If you always get help from the beginning, you will learn less and always hope for another help to come whenever you face a problem. That will make you unable to think by yourself and have the initiative to take actions. Good seniors and supervisors are expected to help you only after you tried to solve the problem.
You will know when to ask for help and when to be on yourself, simply because not all people are available or even have what's needed to help you. Another note, not all people can be trusted as well. So learning all those mistakes and being forced to face the troublesome parts are to help you prepare mentally and physically for this reality.
It's also kind of a point when people around you will judge what kind of person you are, and if you are failed to show them that you are not an easy target, it will bring you more trouble later in the future.
And everything that happened will decide whether you are a good leader or just a loser. So just think about all you do is to get a better position later. A little bit messed up, but that's how you survive in a company."
After the discussion, I tried to follow what they said and yeah, I feel I got a bit matured compared to how I was in my previous company.
