I've been thinking the same thing as well. It solidified for me in the chapter where Compton finds Heejae at the museum. (Ch.168) Compton puts much emphasis on Garam seeming to be in love with the professor and how it goes against his teachings. I believe Compton fell for the Professor as a student, confessed, and pretty much cracked at rejection.
He's become a worse version of Heejae, because atleast Heejae was blunt. Compton is two-faced, manipulative, he is using members of the orchestra to bring down other members. He's moving like a High School meangirl.

"friendship" boy he wants this shit over with so he can go home back to new york, back to getting himself split every night, away from this cult you've built.
Compton is textbook Narcissist. Open the DSM-5 and it's his picture. It's not even about trauma inflicted by Heejae. It's the fact Compton's high grandiosity of self is being denied praise. A narcissist will sink their nails into a grudge. They will use anything and anybody, by all means, to get what they believe they're owed.
