I too think a person should have the right to die with dignity, especially if they have been suffering for a long time, and their relatives without understanding have been suffering for it too. It’s not really legal, but I have seen it happen in my country. A elderly person I knew had a brain haemorrhage and were in the icu for weeks. It was evident that they would never wake up again and their whole family was a mess. The doctors had communicated the chances of them waking up was next to zero and the family kept them in the icu till they emotionally dealt with the loss already, and then elected to discharge the patient and take them home to pass there. It was heartbreaking, but honestly the right choice.
As someone that works in the ICU, he did the right thing agreeing to withdraw life saving measures. A lot of family members and loved ones of patients can’t even fathom the unimaginable pain they’re under. There’s legit zero quality of life and it’s basically prolonging the inevitable. I know it sounds morbid but I wish ‘pulling the plug’ was more normalized because of how patients just end up suffering. I’m not sure how it is in other countries but here if the patient is sick for long enough and they’ve coded before, the doctors don’t push for further medical intervention regardless if patients are full code or not cuz most likely they’re going to be dead soon anyway.
