Back then he was drunk yea, but he didn't hesitate to say hurtful things knowing a child was listening, words that haunted fl for years even more so bc she knew of the 'novel' future in which she gets killed. He then buried his guilt, underestimating how fl felt and lied to himself that she would forget and they could repair their relationship... too bad kids have great memory and a trauma like hearing your father doesn't think you're his child and wants you to live like you're dead doesn't just disappear bc you've been kind a few times
Tbh it felt extremely satisfying seeing the emperor on his knees and reflecting on himself, and it's also obvious fl said hurtful things back bc she actually hoped for affection from him and I'm 100% she will forgive him in the future Though she has now a real family and the emperor will always have to live with the fact he lost the chance to be with the person who was closest to being family since his wife had died
