oof that's worse than I expected. I thought the author was going for a romero and juliette trope but it turns out his mother was forced into having sex with his father (at least that, if not multiple men since she was a trophy whose consent did not matter).
I don't know how I feel about that from a plot perspective. I thought the author was going for a complex plot where MC meets enemies of his paternal family first and becomes friends with them and we get to know all the atrocities his father's side of the family committed before meeting them and learning that they, too, are not the abhorrent villains everyone makes them to be.
In all fairness, that could still happen but the "paternal family hate" is sure building up fast
